By Jose Marc CastroIf there is one economy around the world which has enjoyed the boom times over the last decade then it is the Australian economy which continues to go from strength to strength. The economy was one of the first to leave the worldwide recession and continues to attract overseas skilled workers to fill new positions which are becoming available on a regular basis.
Jobs in Australia
The Australian economy has been converted from one which was dependent on manufacturing sometime ago to one which is now based upon the services sector. Like so many developing economies around the world the services sector is the one which is the engine room of the Australian economy but there is more to the jobs market than just services. Australia has for many years been one of the major mining centres around the globe with massive natural resources which continue to service a significant part of the employment market in Australia.
Working conditions in Australia
While very often it is dangerous to assume like for like conditions when moving overseas there are great similarities between working conditions in Australia and working conditions in the UK. The average working week is around 37 hours, Monday to Friday, overtime payments for out of hours work and holiday and sick leave entitlement. The improvements in working conditions in Australia have been well-documented and are a natural progression for a country and economy which is developing.
The Australian workforce
To give you an idea of the split between the services industry and other industries in Australia, with over 11 million people available for work 75% are employed by the services industry and 21.1% by industry. The rate of unemployment in Australia increased from 4.2% in 2008 to 5.7% in 2009 although it is set to return to lower levels as the economy picks up after the worldwide recession.
A significant part of the Australian workforce is made up of overseas skilled workers who moved to the country over the years. It is unlikely we'll see the same number of overseas skilled workers moving to Australia in the short to medium term due to the fact the economy has now gone through the development stage and could now be described as developed.
Where to work in Australia
There are many different areas offering employment opportunities in Australia although the vast majority of expats are likely to go for one of the major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide. These areas are where the cost of living is highest in Australia but these are the areas where employment activity is focused.
Conclusion
While there are still many job opportunities in Australia the government is beginning to clamp down on the number of skilled workers moving from overseas. As the domestic Australian workforce develops and adopts new skills of its own we will likely see a further reduction in the number of skilled workers coming from overseas. However, there is no doubt that immigration has played a major part in the development of not only Australia as a whole but in particular the Australian economy.
There are many jobs in Australia but what can you expect from the job market in Australia?
